On this Thursday evening, 39-year-old Stanislav Kochanovsky made his debut at the podium of the Wiener Symphoniker and showed at least as much panache as precise sound sense: Modest Mussorgski's Night on the Bald Mountain (1867) was diabolical and rough, while Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky's fourth symphony with conclusive changes in tempo was subtly balanced, wonderfully protruding secondary voices in a - not only in the joyfully scurrying Scherzo - brilliantly playful orchestra. Grateful applause.
